We highly recommend taking a day trip to Savannah, mainly for lunch! Our favorite restaurant is Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room. A line gathers each morning at 107 West Jones Street. Doors open at 11 a.m., though we prefer to get the second seating, so plan to arrive around 11:30. Once inside, you'll sit at one of the large tables-for-ten shared by strangers. Tabletops are crowded with platters of fried chicken and cornbread dressing, sweet potato souffle, black-eyed peas, okra gumbo, corn muffins and biscuits. The menu changes daily. We love the banana pudding for dessert! Note: CASH ONLY.
While in Savannah, we also recommend going down to the waterfront and walking River Street. There are some cute shops and the views are nice.
If you have time for a tour, we recommend the Mercer Williams House Museum, the setting for the 1994 John Berendt book "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" and the movie adaptation.
We also like stopping by Chippewa Square, made famous with its bench scenes in "Forrest Gump." Forsyth Park is also lovely and features the city’s most famous fountain, installed in 1858 and modeled after the fountains at the Place de la Concorde in Paris. We also enjoy stopping by the Savannah Bee Company location on 104 W. Broughton St. (They also have a River Street location.)
Driving around and looking at all of the historic homes is also a treat, including the Gingerbread House (also known as the Cord Asendorf House) at 1921 Bull Street.
